Fang Island-Fang Island [Sargent House]
Awww yeah, a pleasant addition to the ranks of heavy-metal-indie-pop acts like Marnie Stern and the F*cking Champs. Sweet heavy and positive guitar riffs ala Thin Lizzy, chorus-y vocals, and just good energy man to create a sound that band describes as "everyone high-fiving everyone." Also for fans of Ponytail, those who wanted power-metal in their Arcade Fire, and maybe Sonic the Hedgehog. Pretty fresh.

Interview with Free The Robots
by: Kristoner

Think there's no Hip Hop in OC? Free the Robots is changing that. Based in Santa Ana, Free the Robots (aka Chris Alfaro) has been brewing a delicious, head-nodding concoction of funk, world jazz, rock, and electro music. It's no surprise he got the OC Weekly 2009 Reader's Choice Award for Best Hip Hop Artist and Best DJ at the 2009 OC Music Awards. When he's not making music or performing, he's running the hip restaurant, The Crosby, in...

Spotlight on Shapan Debnath
by: Mari Frank

Shapan Debnath has been involved in KUCI ever since first coming to UCI 3 years ago. He has a great show called "How Goes?" The show is not limited to any specific genre, but rather it takes on the personality of its host. From psychedelic pop to abrasive garage rock, the show has brought a variety of music to the KUCI airwaves. The show's playlists has morphed the longer that Shapan's been exposed to the great music at KUCI and the creative DJs. He is currently the productions manager and oversees eve...

Why There's No Money in My 401(k)
A Diary of Obsessive Materialism (Vol. 4)

by Kyle Olson

In an effort to fulfill some bizarre need in my life, I purchase a lot of CDs, both old and new. They are obsessively cataloged and organized and poured over track by track (Seriously, it's obsessive. It involves post-it notes and code and excel spreadsheets). It is truly a labor of love (and an unhealthy psychological imperative). But, since I am consuming so much music, I thought I could use this constant influx for the powers of good. Should I come across anything worth sharing (either a new release or an old favorite), I will share them with you. So you'll love me.

Chain and the Gang — Down with Liberty...Up with Chains! (K)
Somewhere, in a dark basement laboratory, a team of scientists is doing unspeakable experiments with the DNA of Calvin Johnson, Lou Reed, and a team of fiery Baptist preachers. This experiment, an affront to God himself, has boiled down Calvin Johnson's DIY lefty leanings and basement stomp...
