Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory – (Carpark)
It's mind boggling how macroscopically bland mainstream alternative rock radio is in comparison to top 40 hip hop/pop/dance. Rihana's 'We Found Love' marks her 20th number one hit and an interesting career of making music which celebrates the self aware state of pop music as purposefully alienating, opiate-of-the-times, reality shifting, and weirdly monolithic. The Foo Fighters' music continues to be purely hegemonic and socially malignant in a le...

Reggae Reflections
The Best of 2011
by: Jarret Lovell

Reggae, dancehall and dub music has always been a blend of old and new. Built on a foundation of mento which itself is a “creolized fusion” of European- and African-derived music, the early sound of reggae also borrowed heavily from American R&B. Indeed, some of Kingston’s early sound system selectors (i.e., mobile deejays) would return from trips to the United States with much sought out 45 records, hoping to have an exclusive on the song. Spotlight on Dmitriy
host of "Countdown UCI"
by: Barbara DeMarco-Barrett

A talk with Dmitriy, public affairs host of "Countdown UCI,” airing every Friday at 4:00 pm Pacific time.

Even at UCI’s very own radio station, the airwaves were silent of the ups and downs of campus life. I felt that I could fill this void, and tell not only stude...

Why There's No Money in My 401(k)
A Diary of Obsessive Materialism (Vol. 6)

by Kyle Olson

In an effort to fulfill some bizarre need in my life, I purchase a lot of CDs, both old and new. They are obsessively cataloged and organized and poured over track by track (Seriously, it's obsessive. It involves post-it notes and code and excel spreadsheets). It is truly a labor of love (and an unhealthy psychological imperative). But, since I am consuming so much music, I thought I could use this constant influx for the powers of good. Should I come across anything worth sharing (either a new release or an old favorite), I will share them with you. So you'll love me.

Mi Ami — Steal Your Face (Thrill Jockey)
There is a lot of really shitty music. The entertainment industry is full of incredibly bland, boring, trite, un-energetic, passionless crap. And there's stuff like San Francisco trio Mi Ami, who work themselves into a lather laying down visceral junkyard dance...
